Almost any kind of space can be filled with a texture, and failing that you can apply various transformations to do useful things with them.

Mayang’s Free Textures is just that — somewhat over 4,000 textures. I haven’t had an opportunity to review them in depth, but I will next time I need something.

- 200+ High Quality Free Paper Background Textures to Grab collects a slew of links to collections of paper textures.
- A Collection of High Quality Granite Texture to Download would have been incredibly handy for a project I was working on not too long ago. I was trying to fill a rock face, and I see a couple of textures here I could’ve adapted dead easily.
- 35 Free Real Smooth Sand Textures isn’t quite as useful too me directly in that I am unlikely to apply them as I see them here, but I think I can use them as a reference — I can see how to approximate them, which lets me build non-repeating textures as large as I need them.
- 30 Free High Resolution Grass Textures, on the other hand, I could have made use of on the same project as the granite textures above.
- Free High Quality Collection of 33 Bark Textures could have been useful too — not as bark, but with a bit of manipulation some of these could make for a good stone texture.
Man, I really should have checked for more fundamental textures. Instead I’d hit Google image search looking for pictures of what I wanted, when I could’ve just used or adapted something here.
