My New Campaign: AGE of the Badger

Long ago, when G+ was still a thing, I met and befriended a mad Glaswegian named Jason Paul McCartan. The Badger.

The years since have been busy. We’ve had medical events. There have been life changes, planned and unplanned. Job and work changes. Game design and publishing setbacks and progress.

So when my friend posts that he wants to roll some dice, and asks if there is a campaign available?

By damn, I will start a campaign so we can roll dice together again.

AGE of the Badger (Working Title)

This is a great time to dust off some skills and tools I haven’t used much in a while. By happy coincidence it’s April, which means I have fodder for the A-Z Blog Challenge.

We can break out older D&D and a module, if it’s just a matter of getting to table. We want to do something a little more creative.

  • Fantasy AGE has been pretty good to me. Let’s start with that. I’m leaning second edition, but first edition content is still very compatible.
  • Contrary to my normal shenanigans, I don’t expect to house rule much. The one thing that came to mind has already been changed in second edition.
  • Well, maybe one change. If people are down for it, I can see using Dragon AGE spells instead.

Over the last 15 years I’ve come to conclude that regularly scheduled sessions with a fixed group is difficult. Let’s look at something else.

  • Open table. I want it to be easy to switch up the cast for any given session.
  • West Marches style is always an option, but I’m thinking of a different theme.
  • I’ve been reading early Robert E. Howard. I’m digging the pulpy, episodic feel.
  • Let’s go really old school. Put together a team and start almost in media res.

What will this look like in practice?

  • Lead off with some points of interest, with enough outline for players to reasonable pick their doom.
  • Don’t sweat travel and exploration much, unless players want to push into the wilderness to see what can be seen.
  • Get a party together, play starts at an opening to the adventure.

For the rest of the month, I’m going to build out the bits I need to run this campaign. It’s been a while, let’s see how it goes.
