I haven’t yet checked RPGBA today, but even without watching the reaction at google+ I’m pretty sure there is a lot of reaction to Wizard’s announcement that they are developing D&D 5e (which I might have thought they’d have somewhere easy to find on their site, but, well, it is wizards.com).
On the other hand, we had a lot of indicators, so I suspect much of the reaction is “yeah, we saw that coming”. I know we’ve been talking about it for a few months in IRC (and otherwise ignoring it), and I even had a ‘breaking rumor‘ three months ago about it. In other words, as much as it’s an announcement, I expect it’s not one that surprised too many people.
The first notice I had of it was a comment from a friend in IM (quoted below) that kind of sums up my reaction to it.
So as expected, announcement of 5e development starting. Looks like they want to make it a bit more generic a rules system, to support lots of different types of campaigns. My initial thought: “What’ll they call it, DERPS?”
As I described in My Favorite D&D, I was somewhat dubious when I read the 4e design goals. The 5e goals have me outright skeptical, but I will check in from time to time to see how things are coming.
Unless something happens that really sparks my excitement, though, at this point I don’t really plan to post any more on the topic.
