My New Campaign: Fencing, Failure, and Forging Ahead

My participation in the A-Z Blog Challenge always seems to be hit and miss.

Often, I complete the challenge, more or less on time. About as often, I don’t complete nearly on time (last year I ‘finished’ in October!), or even finish at all.

In April 2013 I got as far as ‘T’ (as I recall), because I moved house that month. To the house I’m in now, in fact.

Which leads to the primary cause of this year’s interruption: the fence around my yard was somewhat more than twenty years old, and while the posts were anchored in concrete, the bottoms of the posts themselves were still buried in the dirt.

They rotted, and I had a very wobbly fence indeed.

So, because of timelines for other things, much of this month was spent replacing about 150 feet of fencing. Even using prefabricated fence panels, this was a lot of work, leaving me little time or energy for writing blog posts.

However! I am still committed to getting this campaign off the ground,

Before

The old fences… worn, in some places, falling apart. Plus a pergola in similar condition, and thus became a pergonela.

Percussive disassembly is fun, I must admit. Took me less than thirty minutes to take it apart, and more than a hour to haul the wreckage up for disposal.

Part Way

Fence along one side of the yard is done. Two, actually, but the second one is behind me and even if I turn around, hard to see because of the shed and the house.

Fence sections still are braced in those photos because while the panels and posts were placed, they were not yet set in place. That has since been done and I removed the last braces… today, in fact.

After

I don’t have after photos yet, because I’m still not done. The panels and posts are placed and set, and the posts have been trimmed to a consistent height. I still need to install the post caps, and finish tamping the posts into place. Given the work required (tamping his harder than I expected! And that 17-pound tamping/digging pole feels like it weighs a lot more after using it for an hour) I’m likely to be at this for a few weeks yet.

Closing Comments

I like writing for my blog, and I like designing game stuff.. but real life needs to have priority.

Still, I aim to continue my efforts here. I didn’t meet the deadline, but I will persevere and complete the challenge. And get a campaign ready and well-suited for my brother Teh Bagder.

It’ll just take a little longer than I expected.
