One of the earliest decisions I made with this campaign was to use the Fantasy AGE system.
Last night I realized… with the direction I’m going in the nature of the campaign, I’m no longer certain Fantasy AGE is the best fit. Cthulhu Awakens notwithstanding, the weirdness I aim to lean into might not be best done with AGE System. I’m looking for strange and uncanny, not existential cosmic horror.
Which led me to thoughts of Low Fantasy Gaming, which hits many of the tropes I’m thinking of, at a level that feels right to me. The rules are also more familiar to most of the people I expect to play with, which will make it easier to bring in players.
Or perhaps Tales of Argosa (LFG 2e) would be a better choice. To my embarrassment, I’ve had the physical book for quite a while and haven’t gotten to reading it! I’ve even got it upstairs, I really should see what the differences are.
In any case, the mix of old school, sword & sorcery, and weird things is just about right where I want it. I’ll still need to build out the setting and fill in the details, but I can trust that the underlying rules set will do what I need.
It also, and this is a happy thing for me, give me an opportunity/excuse to get back to my own Low Fantasy Gaming products: Patrons of Low Fantasy, Rituals of Low Fantasy, and Sorcery of Low Fantasy. I’ve wanted to work on those for a while and haven’t found time, now I’ve got a driver.
